Thank you for this! We are a screened family but I always feel like there's room to reevaluate, and I love the thoughtfulness and experience that have gone into your take.
In our house, both parents actually work in software/internet technology (I'm a sometime web-design freelancer and also pursue physical art). My hobbies skew heavily analog but my husband's skew digital. We do feel like we have to reevaluate certain screen time policies now and then because of situations like Greta's!
I just started reading Little House in the Big Woods with the girls and it sure makes me feel some kind of way about the sheer amount of cheap fluffy garbage - toys, low-quality entertainment, clothes, etc - that we consume. I don't want to have to churn my own butter necessarily but there's something to be said for making your own entertainment!
I appreciate your perspective so much. The one Substack post in my inbox I am actually likely to open and read. Thanks for putting your writing out there, it is encouraging to me as I figure out homeschooling and just mom life in general. What a great reminder that we don’t have to let screens crowd out the things we love about mothering and life.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading your experience and I admire your parenting style ! The 18 years of age rule for a cellphone is great which opens up endless free hours of creativity and real social interaction. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences !
That’s amazing! Keep it up! There were no cell phones or not many people had them when my children grew up and Im soo thankful. I worry alot about my grandchildren. Not many parents have the courage to be different. I applaud your family!
I loved having littles without phones or devices. We listened to so many audio books! We now have a phones at 15 policy, but neither of our be-phoned kids have social media.
