Thank you for this! We are a screened family but I always feel like there's room to reevaluate, and I love the thoughtfulness and experience that have gone into your take.

In our house, both parents actually work in software/internet technology (I'm a sometime web-design freelancer and also pursue physical art). My hobbies skew heavily analog but my husband's skew digital. We do feel like we have to reevaluate certain screen time policies now and then because of situations like Greta's!

I just started reading Little House in the Big Woods with the girls and it sure makes me feel some kind of way about the sheer amount of cheap fluffy garbage - toys, low-quality entertainment, clothes, etc - that we consume. I don't want to have to churn my own butter necessarily but there's something to be said for making your own entertainment!

I appreciate your perspective so much. The one Substack post in my inbox I am actually likely to open and read. Thanks for putting your writing out there, it is encouraging to me as I figure out homeschooling and just mom life in general. What a great reminder that we don’t have to let screens crowd out the things we love about mothering and life.
